According to the August issue of Shueisha’s (publisher of the Rurouni Kenshin manga) Jump Square magazine, two new live-action Rurouni Kenshin films have been green-lit and are expected to be released in the summer of 2014. Both films will adapt the manga’s Kyoto arc. This would effectively make them sequels of the first film, which premiered on 25th August 2012 and did really well at the box-office. The article also states that Takeru Satoh will be reprising his role as the titular character Kenshin Himura.
To say that I am excited would be a gross understatement. The first live-action film was wonderfully handled, and watching it was a dream come true. I hope that we’ll be getting confirmation that the rest of the excellent main cast from the first movie will also be reprising their roles:
Clockwise from top left: Emi Takei as Kaoru Kamiya, Munetaka Aoki as Sanosuke Sagara, Yuu Aoi as Megumi Takani and Taketo Tanaka as Yahiko Myojin
I’m also very keen to see who will play the characters that will be introduced in this story arc, especially these five:
Shishio will almost certainly be in the films, as he is the arc’s main antagonist. I am very much hoping the other four will also appear in the films, but I dare not assume yet.
There doesn’t seem to be any word yet as to whether the director of the first Kenshin film, Keishi Otomo, will be returning to direct these movies as well. I’m very much hoping that he will, considering the great job he did with the first one.
